The exact order of steps to downsize your wardrobe, you can do this!
As the years go on, I am less attached to clothing, shoes, and accessories. This must sound like blasphemy to most people who are very much into fashion, crave variety, and love a good sale. However, it is essential to have a critical eye, make those hard decisions and be honest about how much of our wardrobe we wear. But if clothes are part of your identity and you are never seen in the same outfit twice, get out of here (just kidding, but I understand this is a phenomenon). Let’s say you work in an office with a specific clothing requirement, wear scrubs in the medical field, or have a uniform job it is possible to reduce the amount of clothing you keep. If space is limited or it is causing you to feel overwhelmed, downsizing in this area of your life can lift a weight off your shoulders.
The first step is to Sort things into categories, such as all sweaters, t-shirts, pants, workout clothes, etc. This gives you a real sense of how much of each clothing type you have to decide what you need. Second, you get to Purge (my favorite part) and let go of what no longer adds value to your wardrobe. If this feels difficult, get an impartial friend to help, and don’t be wishy-washy about it. This is a bit of tough love, but it is necessary. If the item is faded, ripped, or doesn’t fit, it gets removed from your prime storage areas. Any items in good condition can be donated to those in need at your local Salvation Army store or similar locations.
The third step is to Assign a home for those clothes that survived the purge. Determine what gets folded or hung up based on the frequency of use and your limitations on space. Perhaps you might add some hooks behind a door to hang some gently used clothing items that are not ready to get washed. At this stage, you can use Containers if required. Frequently people jump the gun and get these before taking the other steps, but there is an order to this process. Lastly, you Evaluate the new system to make any necessary adjustments. If your closet is not easy to maintain within two weeks, it’s back to the drawing board to get a routine that sticks. You’ve got this; if not, your local friendly professional organizer is here to help.
